Shobha John, prime accused in blackmailing a top Sabarimala priest was granted bail by the Ernakulam court on Tuesday.

Kochi: Shobha John, prime accused in blackmailing and assaulting a top Sabarimala tantri (priest) was on Tuesday granted conditional bail by the Ernakulam Chief Judicial magistrate.

Police had arrested Shobha John on August 3 for assaulting and blackmailing Thantri Kantaru Mohanaru along with two of her accomplices. The three had been sent to judicial custody on August 3.

The court granted the bail to Shobha John considering the fact that she is a woman and has already been in custody since August 3.

Ernakulam CJM P D Sharanghdharan, however, dismissed the bail pleas of the two other co accused Anil Kumar and Vigil who have been remanded to stay in judicial custody till August 22.

The court has directed Shobha to execute a bail bond of Rs 25,000 along with two solvent sureties for the same amount. She has also been directed to produce a solvency certificate of Rs 25,000 in respect of one of the sureties.

The magistrate also directed her not to leave the Ernakulam limits and surrender her passport before the court.

She has been asked to report before the Circle Inspector, Vanitha (women's) police station, every Saturday till further orders. The police opposed the bail pleas of the other three accused.
