KARUNAGAPPALLY: Revenue Minister Thiruvanchur Radhakrishnan has said that a Rs 1,043 crore worth of projects would be submitted to the Central Government for disaster management in the state. Speaking at a function held at the Tsunami memorial at Azeekkal near here, to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the disaster resulting in the loss of 131 lives in the district, the Minister said that in wake of the concerns over the safety of Mullaperiyar dam the State Government would tie up with the Union Ministry for Science and Technology for developing a state-of-the-art disaster management system. The minister said that Mullaperiyar issue has made the state think about the need to set up an efficient disaster management system. Steps would be taken to set up disaster prevention devices in hospitals in the state to avert any tragedy similar to the one which occurred in a Kolkata hospital recently. He said that the 200 houses to be completed under the Tsunami Rehabilitation project would be completed before the next anniversary. The minister said the demand for waiver of bank loans of tsunami victims will be brought to the notice of the Chief Minister and would be considered with priority.
