CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa allocated Rs 25.62 crore for improving basic refugee camps, giving scholarships to children of the refugees who are pursuing higher studies and for one-time grants to the women’s self help groups run by the refugees. While Rs 4.33 crore was allocated to improve drinking water facilities in the camps, Rs 20.66 crore has been granted for improving basic amenities like street lights, construction of kitchens, lavatories and bathrooms, community halls, ration shops, libraries and for repairing roads. As many 416 SHGs will get Rs 10,000 each as one-time grants.The scholarship to be provided to students pursuing various disciplines of higher studies are: BA-Rs 1,200 per year, B.Sc. - Rs 1,250, MA - Rs 1,330, M.Sc - 1,650, diploma in technical education -Rs 850, B.E. - Rs 2,750, MBBS - Rs 4,700, BVSc - Rs 1,400), B.L. -Rs 860 and B.Sc Agri - Rs 2,850. As many as 1,000 students will be benefited.Recently, the CM has extended the Comprehensive Heath Insurance Scheme to the Lankan Tamil refugees and their family members.
