Rat fever on the rise in Mangalore

Rat fever or leptospirosis claimed a life on Monday taking the death toll in a single family to two.

 Deepak (22), of Parari in Bantwal taluk, complained of fever on August 13 and was admitted to a private hospital on B C Road.

 On suspecting rat fever, the doctors shifted him to Fr Muller Hospital at Kankanady.

 But, by then, his health condition had worsened resulting in renal failure.

 He died on August 16.

 Deepak’s father Seetharam Poojary and bro ther Praveen (17), also complained of fever.

 On August 18, Praveen was discharged from the hospital when blood test for leptospirosis turned out to be negative.

 The following day, he again got admitted to the hospital.

 Praveen died on Monday.

 Poojary’s health is said to be improving.

 Twentysix cases have been reported in Dakshina Kannada upto May this year
