ROURKELA:  Intermittent rainfall since Thursday has disrupted normal life here with  waterlogged streets already a common sight in the low-lying residential areas. This apart,  Balughat and Dandiaplai areas run the risk of being submerged by river Brahmani.Heavy rains induced by a low pressure over Bay of Bengal have been pounding  Sundargarh district. At Kalinga Vihar area of Chhend colony in Rourkela, the main drain was overflowing. Earth moving vehicles were pressed into service to facilitate the water drainage. Particularly affected are slums of Basanti colony and Railway Colony with rainwater entering the shanties. Similar situation prevailed near ITI and areas around Rourkela Steel Plant. Transportation took a hit as well with the single railway track to Birmitrapur near Chhend Colony getting damaged by the downpour. Locals averted an accident by alerting a goods train driver about the damage. This apart, the heavy rains also dampened the celebration of Ganesh puja with people choosing to stay indoors.
