To end waterlogging on Delhi roads, the Public Works Department (PWD) has deployed additional manpower and installed more pumps in vulnerable areas. There are 157 locations on Delhi roads which are vulnerable to waterlogging.
"PWD has installed permanent electric pumps at 95 locations and also arranged for generator sets as stand-by arrangements to meet any eventuality. PWD has also installed temporary pumps at 105 locations to ensure there was no waterlogging during the monsoon," a statement from the civic agency said.
PWD has completed short-term as well as long-term measures in 137 locations to ensure they are free from water-logging. It has also deployed 72 maintenance vans equipped with pumps sets and manpower at various places.
Senior PWD officials and engineers have been asked to independently go on rounds for maintenance of all these roads, it said. During the past two days, PWD has received a list of 31 locations from traffic police where waterlogging was noticed.
"Remedial action has already been taken at all these locations to ensure there was no further waterlogging. Local factors, like polythene, garbage, etc getting stuck in drains play a major role in drastically reducing the capacity of drain. PWD has deployed man-power to attend to such exigencies," it said.
"One responsible officer of the rank of Assistant Engineer shall be posted at the Control Room round the clock throughout the monsoon season," the statement said. Around 40 per cent of these drains also receive sewerage from colonies, hence need continuous desilting or cleaning, said the statement.
"Although desilting and cleaning is a regular process, this will be further intensified during monsoon as per the emergent requirements. PWD has completed the first operation of desilting of all these roads", it added.
