CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) will hold public consultations in major cities of the State to elicit views of the general public over the proposal of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) to increase power tariff.In an official release here, secretary of the TNERC S Gunasekaran said a public consultation would be held in Chennai on January 30 at the Raja Annamalai Mandram near the High Court. In Coimbatore, the consultation would be held on February 2 at the Corporation Kalai Arangam in RS Puram. In Tiruchirapalli it would be held in St Joseph’s College’s Barbier Hall on February 6. In Madurai the hearing will be conducted on February 10 at the Indian Medical Association Hall on the Madurai Medical College premises between . The consultations would be held from 10.30 am to 5 pm in all cities.The tariff petition was admitted on November 25 last year and now the regulatory authority has convened meetings to elicit the views of the public as per the mandate of the Electricity Act, 2003.For domestic consumers, a tariff hike ranging from 20 to 171 per cent is proposed and the current seven-slab system has been sought to be reclassified as a four-tier plan.The TNERC would declare the new tariff order after scrutiny of TANGEDCO’s proposal for hike.
