'Power Cut' Leaves 3 ICU Patients Dead in Tamil Nadu, Hospital Calls it 'Coincidence'
The hospital's dean, however, said that the patients died due to natural causes and the disruption in power supply was a sheer coincidence.

Madurai: A day after three people died at Government Rajaji Hospital here allegedly due to disruption in power supply, the kin of the deceased blamed the management for the deaths. However, the hospital authorities have denied the claims.

The kin of those who died on Tuesday have claimed that the deaths were caused following power outage due to heavy rains across the district and the ventilators in the emergency wards were reportedly not functioning. They have alleged that the lack of sufficient response from the management was the reason behind the demise of the three patients.

However, the hospital has denied the claims and said that after the power cut, the hospital had brought inbuilt batteries to save the remaining patients who were admitted in the emergency ward, which has 15 beds with the provision of ventilators.

The deceased have been identified as Malika A from Melur village, Ravindran from Dindigul district and Palaniammal from Virudhunagar district. The patients allegedly died five minutes after the power cut.

Responding to the reports, K Vanitha, Dean of Madurai Government Hospital, said, "There was power cut for an hour from 7 to 8 pm. The patients, who passed away during the power cut, were already in critical condition. Even before the power cut, one of the patients suffered a cardiac arrest. The generator failed after 20 minutes of operation. The ventilator had an inbuilt battery. The three patients died during the power cut."

There were reports of two more deaths, however, no evidence has been found to substantiate that the deaths were caused due to the lack of power supply in the hospital. "Two more patients had died in the hospital. However, they were brought in after the power was restored," Vanitha added.

Tensions ensued the deaths at the hospital on Tuesday as the families of those who lost their lives entered into a fight with the doctors. However, no official complaint has been filed in the matter.
