BANGALORE: Former prime minister HD Deve Gowda has expressed solidarity with Gadag's Thontadarya mutt seer on the issue of acquiring land of farmers for Posco steel plant in Mundargi taluk.
"I am with the seer on this issue. There is no question of allowing fertile lands of farmers to be acquired for the steel plant. While I extend my solidarity with the farmers, I intend to visit Mundargi soon to be with the farmers in the hour of crisis," Gowda told reporters here on Saturday. Accusing the government of not practising what it preaches, Gowda said Industries Minister Murugesh Nirani keeps on saying that there is no forced acquisition of land but in Mundargi, the government is doing exactly the opposite.

"Moreover, Nirani is misleading the public by saying that majority of the farmers have agreed to acquisition of the land for a higher compensation. It is wrong. The farmers are not interested in giving up their land, no matter how big the compensation is," the former prime minister said.
