PUDUCHERRY: Activists of various organisations staged a rally and a fast near the Raj Niwas on Tuesday to condemn the arrest of social activist Anna Hazare and others.S Hemachandran, president of the Peoples’ Pulse, said the Union government was trying to strangle a mass movement against corruption, which had become prevalent in all sections of the society.He said the arrest of Hazare took place at a place in New Delhi, where there was no prohibitory orders.The present Lokpal bill, if implemented, would not have the desired effect, the Prime Minister, judges and all government officials should be brought under the ambit of the Lokpal to create a corruption free nation, said Hemachandran.The Peoples’ Pulse leader said that if the Union government was earnest about its intentions then the present Bill should not be replaced and not enacted.Hemachandran said there was an overwhelming response from the ordinary people of Puducherry. The activists of nearly 10 social service organisations voluntarily participated in the rally and the fast. They said they would continue with their protest in a peaceful manner.
