CHENNAI: Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S Ramadoss mooted the idea of forming a Farmers Income Commission (FIC) in the party’s shadow budget released to the media here on Tuesday.Stressing the need for improvisation, Ramadoss said that the FIC should engage itself in ensuring fair price for the produce and direct disbursal of salary to farmers and farm labourers.Besides, the FIC will ensure pension and insurance cover for those connected with farming activities.“The FIC will have to take measures to expand precision farming by implementing the necessary updated techniques used in this front and by providing incentives to those take up the precision farming,” he said.He also suggested that the State should stick to natural farming and stay away from the use of Genetically Modified crops.Ramadoss said that the agricultural extension programmes would have to be regularised in such a way that the farmers got details of the technology updates as and when it happened. The State should also come up with its own agricultural policies as that of the Centre may not best suit the States, he said.“Though price of consumer goods has gone up by 50 times, the price of agricultural produces has gone up by only 10 - 15 times”, he noted.“All the 39,000 water bodies in the State should be desilted and deepened so that they can be utilised to their fullest potential,” he added.
