Known for his extravagant style and grandeur, veteran fashion designer JJ Valaya will be showcasing his fall winter 2011 collection at Pune as a part of the Signature International Fashion Tour.City Express catches up with him to know more about his collection.Could you elaborate on your collection, Tasveer? It is a ready-to-wear collection, predominantly for women. The collection’s palate depicts the evolution of photography.Starting with black and white, sepia, hand-stained, natural and finally culminating to digital. This fascinating journey of colours, though distinctly ‘royal’ Valaya in spirit, also speaks subtly of the incredible evolution within the colours found in still images. The collection's imagery is very strong. It is something that cannot be told, but needs to be felt. What can one expect at the show? The collection emphasises fluidity in perfect harmony. The Indian collection is an elegant mix of tradition. It offers an assortment of sarees in luscious georgette with brocade borders and delicate embroideries. The anarkalis with clean cut empire lines, sewn in hand-woven fabrics are embellished with swarovskis that add to the sensuality of the collection. As the collection unfolds, the signature Valaya jackets will also make an appearance.Who should wear a Valaya? It is someone who seeks elegant finery with just the right dose of regal sophistication. What do you think about Bangalore and would you like to bring the Valaya label to the city? Interestingly, when I first started my career, the city where I sold my very first labelled outfit, happened to be Bangalore. However, due to poor and diminishing market we never got to progress much.In terms of fashion, yes, I do think there is a market, but, the city is not ready for my couture yet. There is fashion, but not high-fashion.I would not bring Valaya Muse or Valaya couture to Bangalore, but what I would like to bring is Valaya Base or Quantum.I think they would do very well. How would you describe your own style? A maharani had once visited our store, and she I think had aptly described my style. She had said, ‘You have truly captured the future of the past,’ that I feel sums it up.I like mixing traditions with modernity. The contradictions That the mix of the two puts forward is fascinating. What made you choose Irfan Khan as your showstopper? To me a showstopper is not the person wearing the ensemble, it is the garment in itself. It is the spirit of the show and can be worn by anyone who can carry it off.The person does not have to be a prominent personality, it must be someone with a lot of charisma. Is the Alika jacket an answer to the Channel classic jacket? What next for JJ Valaya? The jacket was launched last year and has been successful. It took us a long time to decide the silhouette as it would be something that would not change. It is a very versatile piece and can be combined with anything. As far as the future is concerned, there is a lot on the cards at the moment. After all you can never ‘rest on your laurels’.
