CHENNAI: A peace rally was organised to mark World Literacy Day by the Consumer Club of the DG Vaishnav College. The rally, which took place at the Marina Beach on Thursday, was flagged off by Higher Education Minister P Palaniappan, in the presence of Civil Supplies Deputy Commissioner S Vijayan.Speaking at the event, S Narasimhan, Principal of DG Vaishnav College, said, “The members of the Consumer Club of our College will conduct a survey on literacy level and its associated factors in urban underprivileged section of the society and in more particular among the people in the informal services sector. They will also impart the need of education to the parents which in turn will benefit. The college Secretary, P Haridas urged the students not to stop with conducting a rally but also go to slums and take free classes for the needy students. The student representative, Rahul, promised that students of the College would also visit Shelter, a home for special kids affected by HIV+ in this regard.
