Islamabad: Pakistan on Friday officially confirmed that it has started investigation in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks based on the leads provided by India in the evidence dossier.
Pakistan said it has initiated a "series" of actions in connection with 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in the first official response to India.
The response came a day after External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee asked Pakistan to use diplomatic channels and not the media to communicate with India.
Pakistan has also said that it is implementing the United Nations Security Council ban on Jamaat-ud-Dawa.
Pakistan Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir handed over a formal reply to Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan Satyabrata Pal along with a copy of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani's letter to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The information was shared with Pal after a meeting at the Foreign Office in Islamabad on Friday.
A statement by the Foreign Office spokesman said that an official inquiry has already been launched as announced by the Prime Minister Gilani in his address to the National Assembly on January 13.
Pakistan has claimed that actions and steps have been taken under the international obligations in response to the United Nations Security Council ban on Jamaat-ud-Dawa and also given on the number of arrests made.
It also said that 124 suspected terrorists have been arrested in the crackdown on terror groups the websites of Jamaat have been sealed too.
However, Pakistan has maintained that since there was no extradition treaty with India so all the culprits will be tried in Pakistan itself.
Islamabad has also formed a three-member team to investigate leads from the terror dossier.
The committee headed by Additional Director General of the Federal Investigative Agency (FIA) Javed Iqbal will be allowed to exchange information directly with Indian investigation agencies.
The other two members - Khalid Qureshi and Liaquat Ali Khan - are also from the FIA. The panel will finalise its report on the Indian dossier and submit it to Gilani.
The committee has been asked to complete the probe "as soon as possible" but it will submit weekly reports to senior officials.
India had given an evidence dossier related to Mumbai terror attacks to Pakistani High Commissioner in India Shahid Malik on January 5.
Pakistan has been under tremendous pressure from India and the international community to hold fair and transparent investigation into the Mumbai attacks.
India has blamed Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba and its front the Jamaat of masterminding and executing the attacks on Mumbai.
Even Mohammad Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone terrorist captured during the attacks, told his interrogators that he along with nine other terrorists who attacked Mumbai was trained in Lashkar camps in Pakistan.
