THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Opposition has upped the ante against jailed former minister R Balakrishna Pillai over his controversial and illegal phone calls from his hospital bed, with an LDF delegation, led by Opposition  Leader V S Achuthanandan, seeking the intervention of Governor M O H Farook in the issue. After presenting a memorandum to the Governor, Achuthanandan, flanked by LDF leaders, told reporters here on Thursday that Pillai was regularly interfering in the day to day functioning of the portfolios held by his son Minister K B Ganesh Kumar. It has also become clear that he had spoken to the Chief Minister’s office and his  secretary over mobile phone, when he was barred from  doing so as one undergoing a jail term, he said. “The government has flouted the jail rules. He has been lodged in a specialist hospital and five star facilities have been provided to him. He was allotted  parole against the rules prior to his hospitalisation.  “The government has not taken any steps against him even when it was found that he had used mobile phones in contravention of jail rules,’’ the memorandum said. Pillai is having his way though he claims to be sick, it said. ‘’Only a judicial inquiry will bring out the whole truth in the Pillai’s phone call episode,’’ Achuthandan said. On a query whether the Supreme Court will also be approached on this score, the Opposition Leader said that it would be thought of in due course.  “Terming the Opposition’s move as one intended to create only unnecessary controversies, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy blamed the opposition for distracting public attention from ‘’real issues’’ concerning the state.
