Right from when Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit made millions of heads turn with her beautifully sequined choli in the blockbuster song Choli ke peeche kya hai, the humble blouse has taken on a whole new meaning. Having made its way well into mainstream fashion with designers experimenting more and more with lengths, cuts and designs, cholis have caught attention like never before.
Giving Chennai a whole new choli experience is the latest collection of blouses on display at the Aavaranaa Boutique. Vijayalakshmi Krishna, managing partner of the boutique sorts through the neatly arranged hangers of colourful materials as she explains that they have both stitched and unstitched cholis.
“We’ve matched the stitched cholis with saris that we think will go with it, but it’s only a suggestion,” she explains as she picks up a pink Banarasi choli. “But if you notice, most of these blouses have more than one colour and pattern on them, so you can mix and match them with saris and wear with more than one combination,” she adds. Apart from chiffons and silk, the store also has on display a range of everyday cotton blouses with simple prints.
She chooses a high-neck blouse as one of her favourites. “The fit is quite modern and it’s loose – almost shirt-like,” she says. “We have the same in a Banaras pattern and it is the best option for summers.”
Aavaranaa also has on display a collection of teracotta jewellery to go with the choli collection. In various shades of sombre greens, blues, yellows and reds, the collection consists of sets that include chains and jhumkis or studs and earrings. “They’re all handmade with organic colours,” Vijayalakshmi informs us. The earrings are as simple as just bells of different sizes and come with parrot and the traditional mango motifs as part of the sets. After modeling a side pendant neck piece, Vijayalakshmi picks up a simple beaded neck piece as she adds, “We also have jewellery that can be worn with modern outfits, like maybe with a white shirt.”
The cholis start at a price range of Rs 450 and go on up to Rs 3,500. Teracotta jewellery is available in the range of Rs 600 – Rs 6,500.
