CHENNAI: As the nurses stir at the Vijaya Group of Hospitals entered its second day, the turn of events began to show a strikingly similar pattern to the strikes that had been seen in other city hospitals. According to a member of the nurses union, the hospital’s management had allegedly closed the nurses hostel in Vadapalani and said that they would be granted access only when the strike was withdrawn. This was similar to allegations made by nurses from other city hospitals when they had gone on strike two months ago.“They even sealed off the toilets to put us under pressure,” said the nurses representative. Accordingly, after negotiations in the evening, the management apparently relented and agreed to open the hostels for the nurses. Close to 300 of the striking nurses are from Kerala and are dependent on the hostels. When contacted, hospital authorities denied the charge and said that negotiations to end the stir were well underway. The nurses maintain that the stir will carry on through Wednesday.
