BANGALORE: If the State Government is making way to give away the century-old building belonging to Department of Collegiate Education (DCE) to other government departments, check this: The Regional Joint Director's (JD) office belonging to DCE on Kalidasa Road is almost likely to be handed over to South Western Railways (SWR) thanks to the cold attitude of the State Government and higher education department officials.
The New Indian Express, on Wednesday (July 6), carried an article on various government departments eyeing on the heritage building on Seshadri Road which belongs to DCE. Now, it is the turn of the Regional Joint Director's Office, also a heritage building, built when Maharani's College was constructed in 1936. This building was Maharani College principal's residence quarters. But for the last 25 years, it has housed the Regional Joint Director's office.According to the documents available with Express, the South Western Railways has agreed for the total concept plan of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). In this, BBMP is undertaking many projects including road widening for which SWR is giving its land in many parts of the city. The government order passed in the month of February says that BBMP needs 12,818 square metre space from SWR, in turn SWR will get the land from Collegiate Education Department.

When contacted, a senior official who did not want to be named said that BBMP did not bother to inform Collegiate Education or Higher Education Department. "After everything was decided, they told us the decision. Later, they told our officials to look for the new building," the official sources said.

Sources in the JD office told Express that they were told to move to a building belonging to BBMP near Jasma Bhavan. After government order, senior officials from the department visited the new building and gave a report. The report said that its a five storeyed building with no lift facility. There is no parking facilities for two and four wheelers. Building needs electricity as well as water connection. Moreover, building needed renovation with compound facility. Without these, building is not fit to shift.

Sorry state of affairs

"The bad smell is intolerable. The building was a ladies hostel, but no one has occupied it for the past 15 years," a neighbour said.
