New Delhi: The effervescent character of Tamil coconut seller Krishnan Iyer MA, played by veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty in the original Agneepath, has been done away with in the 2012 remake. The absence of the role that sky-rocketed Chakraborty's career and endeared him to millions may take away a key element from the new film's narration.
The Amitabh Bachchan cult classic, penned from a title scripted by his poet father Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was directed by Mukul S Anand in 1990.
Missing is also the song 'I am Krishnan Aiyer MA, I am nariyal pani wala...' The song was a hit in the 90s. It may be the generation gap or the demand for item numbers in current films, but an item song 'Chikni Chameli' starring Katrina Kaif has been inserted in place of the coconut song in the new film.
Will 'Chikni Chameli' gain as much popularity as that of 'I am Krishnan Aiyer MA'?
Hrithik's portrayal of the legendary 'Vijay Dinanath Chauhan', made famous by Bachchan, and Sanjay Dutt's role of antagonist 'Kancha Cheena' have stirred up curiosity among 'Agneepath' fans.
The film also has new characters. 'Rauf Lala' is a negative character played by Rishi Kapoor and 'Kaali' the female lead role by Priyanka Chopra.
Karan Malhotra directed the remake along with Karan Johar producing it under Dharma Production's banner. A lot is expected from Karan Johar as his father Yash Johar’s Agneepath flopped at the box office in 90s.
Agneepath, Don and Satte pe Satta - three of Bachchan's cult films - will see remakes in the next two years.
