KOCHI: Getting admitted to a hospital might be among the worst ways to hurt your pocket. But not if the hospital involved is the Ernakulam General Hospital. On the contrary, being admitted here might actually earn you a few extra bucks! The general hospital is all set to get a rehabilitation centre under its physical medicine wing where patients will not only be treated but will also get an opportunity to produce small scale goods and sell them. “This is targeted at those patients who are on wheelchairs and others with similar disabilities. In their free time they can make small products like soaps, soap powders, phenyl and so on. A kiosk will be set up to sell the produce. They can also sell it to the hospital. The facility will be extended to some of the patients at the Palliative Care Unit and in the Destitute ward.”, said Superintendent of the hospital, Dr Junied Rehman. The move is part of an ambitious project under the Asset Maintenance Fund for which the hospital has received a fund of Rs 2 crore. The money will go into renovation and modernisation of the physical medicine wing. Facilities like a well equipped gymnasium and cubicles for Infra red therapy, phototherapy and other treatments are part of the plan.
