Nano as patrol vehicle is a huge hit

With the Kochi Police adding yet another Tata Nano to its existing fleet of patrolling vehicles in the city, the Department believes that nabbing law-breakers has been made more effective.

According to I G Padmakumar, the car’s design has given them the advantage of moving around on the narrowest of roads. The small yellow vehicle of the Kochi Police has been stationed at patrol areas in and around M G Road. Certain areas of Shanmugham Road and Banerjee Road have also been brought under its purview, and are among the other routes being closely monitored by this patrol car.

“Since the Nano is a small car, it is easier to manoeuvre in difficult terrain and makes it that much simpler for us to catch the crooks, without being noticed. Also, there is ample scope for us to traverse through the narrowest of roads in this car. However, the greatest advantage of this car is the ability to patrol the city during the rainy seasons,” Padmakumar said.

Earlier, only motorcycles and jeeps were being used by the police force to patrol in and around the city. “However, during inclement weather, patrolling on two-wheelers and in jeeps became a difficult task. With the introduction of the car to our fleet of vehicles, we hope to be around the city 24-hours,” he added.

Currently, the car is under the custody of the Traffic police east. The car, which was handed over to I G Padmakumar during a function held on Independence Day, was presented by the Rotary Club of Cochin Downtown. “Five more similar vehicles are expected to be provided to Kochi Police, if the present car proves effective for the cops,” said Cochin Task Force General Convenor Madhav Chandran.

Rotary Club, as part of its Road Safety Campaign, had also conducted a Road Safety Rally on Independence Day, with around 35 cars participating. The Nano Patrol Car had escorted the rally which covered the towns of Kalamassery, Aluva, Angamaly, Perumbavoor,      Kothamangalam,  Muvattupuzha, Koothattukulam, Mulanthuruthy, Tripunithura and ended at Kochi in the evening.
