ROURKELA: The MLA from Birmitrapur George Tirkey along with 223 other agitators were on Saturday evening sent to judicial custody after a local court rejected their bail pleas. They were arrested from Lathikata for staging an indefinite blockade of the NH-23 disrupting traffic movement.Though police had rounded up over 350 persons, including women, from the agitation site on Friday, women were let off after a day’s detention at the Sector-18 community centre here.Majority of the protestors were employees of the defunct refractory plant Orind who have been demanding immediate release of their outstanding dues and restoration of production in the plant. Meanwhile, Sundargarh Collector Rupa Roshan Sahu on Saturday held a meeting with Deputy Labour Commissioner BC Panda on the outstanding dues from the Orind management. The protestors have been claiming that the management owed around Rs. 24 crore -- unpaid salaries of 14 months -- besides Provident Fund and other statutory dues and financial benefits of retired and dead employees.
