Tension gripped the Government Hospital here on Sunday after a huge quantity of drugs were found dumped on the hospital campus.
Locals and patients took up the matter with Collector Durgaprasad Behera. They alleged that the hospital authorities barred people from availing of free medicines supplied by the Government, adding that good stock was also burnt by the hospital authority.
The Collector visited the hospital and has directed the health officials to conduct an inquiry into the incident.
Drug inspector Dharmananda Puhan and joint director of public health Prafulla Panda also visited the hospital to investigate the matter. “Huge quantity of expired medicines were found dumped and burnt on the campus,” said Puhan. No good stock has been dumped, he added.
Locals, however, alleged that doctors here never prescribe the medicines supplied by the Government. The poor patients are instead forced to buy the expensive medicines from outside, said Prafulla Naik, a social worker.
Akbar Ali, the former chairman of Kendrapara municipality, said, “The authority should take action against the doctors and staff of the hospital who dumped valuable medicines worth lakhs of rupees.
CDMO S Sharma confirmed that the hospital authority had burnt some expired medicines and packets.
