New Delhi: The Maoists in Nepal are now expected to secure an absolute majority in the 601 member new constituent assembly.

They are on course to win three times more seats than the next largest party in elections.

The Maoists have won 116 out of the 215 seats declared so far. Sectors previously wary of the former rebels are now putting out feelers towards them.

The army and business leaders have said they are confident that they will be able to do business with the newly elected government.

The Maoists, which is poised to head a new coalition government in Nepal, earlier on Tuesday said the 240-year-old monarchy will be abolished within a month with its leader Prachanda even saying there will not be even a symbolic King.

"I think within one month all these things (end of monarchy) should be clear and I hope and I expect that within one month we will organise the first meeting of the first assembly and that first meeting should abolish the monarchy," Prachanda said.

Prachanda's comments suggested it is only a matter of procedure to scrap monarchy. Ending monarchy has already been incorporated in the interim constitution, he said.

The 54-year-old former school teacher, who is in the forefront for sacking the unpopular King Gyanendra, also discounted the possibility that there could be a demand for "ceremonial monarchy".
