Maneka Clashes With NCW Chief Again, Objects to Summons Against Salman
An angry minister hit out at NCW chief Lalitha Kumaramangalam at a meeting saying there was no need to give priority to the case against celebrities as there were several cases of rape pending with the panel.

Women and Child Welfare development minister Maneka Gandhi has confronted the chief of the National Commission for Women (NCW) over summoning Salman Khan for his "rape" remark, sources said on Friday.

An angry minister hit out at NCW chief Lalitha Kumaramangalam at a meeting saying there was no need to give priority to the case against celebrities as there were several cases of rape pending with the panel.

She said if Khan did not turn up it would set a bad example, and that other accused would start using it as a precedent to avoid summons from the NCW.

This is the second confrontation between the two, with the NCW earlier objecting to Maneka's plan for a system to police those abusing women online.

Meanwhile, the Bollywood superstar defied the NCW's summons and failed to appear before the panel on Friday.

According to a statement by the Commission, it received a legal response from Salman's team and is evaluating the next step.

"Mr Khan or his legal team has not appeared before the Commission. However, the Commission has received a response from his legal team, which is currently being examined by the Commission," the statement said.

Chairperson Lalitha Kumaramangalam, however, refused to spell out on what possible action could be taken against the actor.

The NCW had written to the actor to issue a public apology but later summoned him after it found his reply "unapologetic and unsatisfactory".

The commission had warned Salman that if he failed to appear before the panel it may proceed to take action against him as it deems fit.
