The Madras High Court on Monday directed police to register a case against former Madurai Kamaraj University VC Kalyani Mathivanan for allegedly misusing varsity funds to the tune of Rs 11.66 lakh.

Madurai: The Madras High Court on Monday directed police to register a case against former Madurai Kamaraj University VC Kalyani Mathivanan for allegedly misusing varsity funds to the tune of Rs 11.66 lakh.

She had allegedly used the amount for payment of legal expenses for a criminal case registered against her for engaging goondas to attack a professor for making some complaints against the university authorities to the Governor and National Assessment and Accreditation Committee.

A police case was registered on May 16, 2014, on a complaint given by professor A Srinivasan against Mathivanan and six others under various section of IPC including 307 (attempt to murder).

Mathivanan allegedly engaged two senior lawyers and paid them Rs 11.66 lakh and despite opposition from two syndicate members the fees for the personal case was paid from the university funds.

Petitioner Lionel Anthonyraj said that he had given a complaint against the former VC to the Inspector of Nagamalaiputhukottai seeking to take action against her for misusing the public fund (university funds) but so far no action had been taken. Hence the court should intervene and direct the police to take action against her.

Justice MM Sundaresh said if cognisable offence had been made out against Mathivanan, police could register a case and proceed further as per law.
