Lucknow: Students of King George Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow have gone on a rampage alleging that a fellow student died due to medical negligence of the college authorities. The KGMU authorities however, maintain that they did what was best possible at that moment.
"It was an accident and we are shocked and grieved. We tried our level best to save the boy. The decision to shift the child to a private hospital was also taken," Assistant Registrar Fazili Ahmed said.
Second-year MBBS student, Deepak Aggrawal, fell down at the convention centre of the university on Wednesday night.
He was admitted in the trauma centre but he succumbed to his injuries due to non-availability of a ventilator.
Before he could be shifted to any other hospital he died.
The students went on a rampage and have burnt the convention centre and the computer laboratory of the university. Roads outside the college have also been blocked by the students.
Students are now demanding compensation for Agarwal’s family and have also asked for Vice-Chancellor Prof Mahendra Bhandari’s resignation.
However, Bhandari has admitted that the medical university is not fully fit to meet emergency requirements.
An FIR has been lodged by the KGMU administration against the rioters. Meanwhile, all departments in the university including the trauma centre have been shut down following the incident.
