Jammu: A lieutenant colonel of the Rashtriya Rifles on Friday allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service pistol in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Lt Col Pankaj Jha, posted with the 15 Sector Rashtriya Rifles in Mahore area of Udhampur, fired a shot on his temple, Senior Superintendent of Police, Reasi, J L Sharma said.
Hearing the gunshot, other personnel rushed to his room to find Jha in a pool of blood. The officer died on the spot, Sharma said.
The reason behind Jha taking the extreme step was not known, he said adding a case has been registered by police and the post-mortem would be conducted later.
Confirming the suicide of the officer, 16 Corps spokesman Col D K Badola said a court of inquiry has been ordered into the incident and reasons would be known only after the report comes in.
This is the fourth incident of an army officer committing suicide this year. Surya Chakra recipient Captain Sumit Kohli committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle in Kashmir in March allegedly due to depression resulting from martial discord.
Major Shoba Rani, an army doctor attached with IAF in Banglore, took her own life by shooting herself on May 29.
Lieutenant Sushmita Chakerverty committed suicide by shooting herself with the service rifle of a jawan at Northern Command headquarters at Udhampur on June 16.
On August 16, Sepoy Koushal Patel of 43 RR committed suicide at Rajouri district while on September 29, BSF jawan Madhusudhan Reddy shot himself to death at BSF headquarters at Santnagar in Sringar.
Nail Manpani of 17 RR committed suicide by shooting himself at Banihal area in Doda district on October two. It was followed by the suicide of Sepoy Sher Singh of 23 RR at Nachlana in Ramban on November 17.
