CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has announced a complete waiver of the Value Added Tax (VAT) on LPG. The move will bring down the cost of one LPG cylinder by Rs 4.73, effectively pegging the net increase in LPG prices at Rs 35.27 per cylinder. Jayalalithaa also took the opportunity to lash out at the Centre for its 'improper' move of asking States to cut taxes after it had effected a steep rise in LPG prices.
"Taking the State's fiscal situation into account along with the fact that the Centre is refusing to roll back the hike and with the understanding that the common man is put through a great deal of suffering, I have decided to waive the 4 per cent VAT on LPG, effective July 1. This is the maximum possible cut that the State can make. Even in the future, VAT will not be imposed on LPG," said Jayalalithaa in a press release. The price of one LPG cylinder will now be Rs 383.67.
