Kolkata: Services in all state-run medical colleges across West Bengal were severely hampered as junior doctors and interns intensified their protest on Wednesday.

The agitating medicos, already into their 13th day of protest, sat on dharnas in front of their colleges and went on an indefinite cease work in all departments, except in critical and in emergency care.

They are opposing the Centre's decision to introduce OBC quota in educational institutions from June 2007.

Groups of students holding placards sat in demonstrations at the Cacutta Medical College, Chittaranjan National Medical College (CNMC), R G Kar Medical College, NRS Medical College, SSKM Medical College, R Ahmed Dental Collge and Guru Nanak Dental College in the metropolis.

Reports from medical colleges in Bardhaman, Bankura, North Bengal and Midnapore said agitating medicos had intensified their protest everywhere by planning rallies, shouting slogans and burning effigies of Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh.

An impromptu rally would be organised on Wednesday by the CNMC medicos in the heart of the metropolis along with students of other medical colleges, IIT and IIM, the protestors said.

A CNMC student leader spearheading the 13 day movement, Dr Shivalik Banerjee said, "Our protest so far has been silent and non-violent.

I don't think the government understands this language. We will not leave any stone unturned now to mark our protest, even if it means going all out". Students sat on hunger strikes at both CNMC and Bardhaman Medical College.

Banerjee said over 5000 students from various disciplines would join a previously planned mega rally on May 27, which would now become a show a strength for the protestors.
