Kerala gets Centres nod to form second commando battalion

The Central Government has given sanction to form a second commando force in the state, said Chief Minister Oommen Chandy here on Friday.

“Steps will be taken without delay to select the commandos for the second battalion and give them training,” the Chief Minister said while addressing the passing-out parade of the ‘Thunderbolts’, the first commando force of the state police at the Special Armed Police Camp, Peroorkkada.

There are 160 commandos with the ‘Thunderbolts’, who have been given rigorous training for 18 months at various Special Forces Institutions across the country. The wing, under the India Reserve Battalion, was formed to tackle the possible terror strikes and other such emergency situations.

Later, the Chief Minister presented trophies for those who excelled during the training period. Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, DGP Jacob Punnoose, ADGP (Armed Police Battalion) R Sreelekha, Battalion DIG E J Jayaraj and Battalion Commandant Satheesh Bino took the salute from the commandos.  ENS
