New Delhi: Meenakshisundaram, the accused in the Shankararaman murder case in 2004, was on Tuesday attacked by unknown assailants.

Meenakshisundaram was attacked while he was returning to his KK Nagar residence in Chennai. He suffered 15 wounds, including one on his head.

Soon after the incident occurred, his wife admitted him in Government General Hospital in Chennai. Doctors said he is out of danger and can be discharged from the hospital after another round of check up.

Although the police said the incident was not related with the Shankararaman murder case, it suspected that the assulters were the same people who has mistakenly assaulted Ramesh — mistaking him for Meenakshisundaram — in March 2006.

Sankararaman, a devotee of the Kanchipuram mutt who had been campaigning against the Shankaracharya, was hacked to death by five men within a temple compound in September 2004. He was 52 when he died. Kanchi acharyas Jayendra Saraswathi and Vijayendra Saraswathi are the main accused in the case.

The police alleged that the assualters were the same people who had falsely surrendered in the Shankaaraman case and were unhappy with the money they received for surrendering to the police.

Meenakshisundaram, the petitioner, had engaged the advocate M Krishna Kumar to facilitate the fake surrenders of five accused and also the recovery of Rs.10,000.
