HYDERABAD: Apart from insurance companies and hospitals, one more thing that works on human emotions - chain mails. And why? Because they threaten you to forward the mail to 12 people, to avoid bad luck. There is so much junk flowing around emails these days, that quite frankly, it is addictive and people forward them to get over their fears. Emails consisting of pictures of Jesus Chirst, Hindu deities or cute babies, which carry a message in huge and bold fonts have been a hit in many cases. But, people do not care about the cute animated cartoon of a dancing baby singing some parody of “Tiny Bubbles” in the bathtub anymore. Gone are the times when it was cool to send a forwarded email, or count the number of email ids in a chain mail. ‘Email Deleting Syndrome’ has caught up with most of the people, who trash an email after seeing the subject line, especially if they are forwards. “I’ve now got to the point with some of my friends that every time I see their name pop up I know I’m just going to hit the delete button,” says Shiva Sai, an MBA student. He then adds, “I do not mean to offend them, but they should realise that after a point of time those emails are very annoying.”The fear psychosis plays around very well in such emails. Preeti Raghunath, a research student at University of Hyderabad says she does want to junk it and ends up forwarding the emails. “These chain mails are very annoying. It has happened often that once you forward an email to 12 ppl to avoid “bad luck”, you realise they are gonna mail it back to you and the chain goes on. People at least end up forwarding them to a couple, if at least not the specified number.” A few also believe that these mails are pure blackmailing of people’s emotions and beliefs. So does, Pamula Venkata Satya Kumar, AVP, associate vice president. He says, “Gosh! I get so many irritating mails. I think people forward because of a fear psychology. I mean, specially the ones in mails that say if you don’t forward it to 15 people, some thing bad will happen to your mother. Some do not take chances, but the rest like me they dump. I get annoyed by these mails and I think its pure black mailing on peoples’ emotions, beliefs and rituals. It also says Sai Baba will curse if you don’t forward it. Which sensible person would believe that?”
