New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed died on Thursday at Delhi's All India Medical Institute of Medical Sciences. The 79-year-old was suffering from sepsis, low blood counts and pneumonia.
He was admitted to AIIMS on December 24 after he complained of neck pain and fever. He had been put on ventilator support.
The Chief Minister breathed his last around 7.30 AM, Education Minister and spokesman for Government Nayeem Akhter said. The mortal remains of the Chief Minister would be flown to Srinagar where the body will be kept for people to have the last glimpse of their leader. He is likely be buried in his ancestral village in South Kashmir.
Sayeed, 79, is survived by his wife, three daughters including PDP President Mehbooba Mufti, and a son.
He took over as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir in the People's Democratic Party (PDP)- Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) coalition on March 1, 2015.
His health had sparked off speculation that there could be a possible change of guard. Sayeed had himself hinted during a press conference in Jammu in November that he would like to hand over the reins to his daughter Mehbooba Mufti.
