BANGALORE: Destination-oriented routes, which operate on a single route from the suburbs to the central business district (CBD) are outdated and should be replaced by a more efficient system like trunk and feeder service, according to Urban Planning expert Dr Ashwin Mahesh. He was speaking at a seminar organised to discuss methods to double the usage of public transport jointly by the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) and Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) here on Thursday. “A trunk and feeder system would cut down on redundant direction-oriented routes, the buses of which can then be diverted to feeder services in order to increase frequency,” he said citing the example of a study conducted on Hosur Road which showed that 172 direction-based routes could be pruned down to 89 trunk and feeder-based routes. “This step would also improve numbering and the recall value of buses in the minds of commuters,” Mahesh said. Mahesh also called for various other measures like integration of BMTC control room with the Traffic Management Centre of the police in the future which would lead to greater coordination and plan continuous data collection strategies in order to help mobility planning. Speaking earlier in the day, Alessandra Gorini, Project Leader, UITP, Brussels, outlined a project ‘2025= PTX2’ which looks at doubling the use of public transport in the world by 2025. P B Ramamurthy, Principal Secretary, Transport Department, in the inaugural session, said that Karnataka is planning to bid for Bangalore to host the 62nd UITP World Congress in 2017. The 61st World Congress would be held in Geneva in May 2013 and the 63rd Congress would be in 2015 in Milan.
