India and Pakistan on Monday exchanged lists of nuclear installations and facilities.

New Delhi: India and Pakistan on Monday exchanged lists of nuclear installations and facilities covered under a 1988 Agreement on the Prohibition of Attack against Nuclear Installations and Facilities between the two countries.

The lists were exchanged through diplomatic channels simultaneously at New Delhi and Islamabad, an External Affairs Ministry spokesman said.

The agreement signed on December 31, 1988 between the two nations came into force in 1991 and the first such exchange of information was on January 1, 1992.

Under the agreement both Pakistan and India are to refrain from attacking each other's nuclear facilities in the event of a war.

On January one of every calendar year, both countries are to inform each other of nuclear installations and facilities to be covered by the Agreement.

This was the 16th consecutive time that both the countries exchanged such a list.
