Palm wine is an alcoholic beverage which is created from the sap of various species of palm trees such as palmyra, date palms and coconut palms. It is known by various names in different regions and is common in various parts of India. In the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, this drink is popularly known as Kallu.
Kallu is consumed by many in the rural parts of these states at the end of the day mainly after work. In Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, you can spot the Kallu selling shops at every kilometre. With the onset of summer in India, the sale of these drinks has also increased in these states. A man in Bheemunipatnam in the Vishakahaptnam district has devised a new way to capitalise on this opportunity. Apart from selling fresh Todi Kallu- a stronger and highly intoxicated version of Kallu (palm wine), the man sings peppy songs to attract customers.
A Kallu selling worker Ramu sings entertaining songs to increase his sales. He sits under the palm tree along with his wife and sells these drinks in the Bisleri bottle and other containers. He has been extracting the palm and selling the drinks while singing songs since the start of the summer plum tree season.
On the road leading to Bheemunipatnam, which is very close to Visakhapatnam, the Kallu workers have to survive the whole year with the income earned by climbing the trees during this summer season. Every year we earn our living by selling these drinks says Ramu, while talking to Local18. These workers claim to sell pure Kallu drinks without injecting any medicine or flavour substance. They climb palm trees to draw out pure Kallu.
The summers result in increased prices. A litre bottle costs Rs 80 and Rs 160 for two bottles. According to reports, a kallu muntha i.e. kallu maggu is sold for Rs 30 and kallu glass is sold for Rs 20. Visakhapatnam has reportedly more than 100 to 200 Kallu shops.
