The school campus alone houses over 200 different species of plants, each with its unique traits. It is the Ramanabaile Government Higher Primary School in Sirsi Taluk, Uttara Kannada district. The school has created two special forests: one named Pandava Van and the other Chamatkari Van. In Pandava Van, five plants are named after the Pandavas, each representing their qualities. Chamatkari Van features plants like Madhunashini, Hormuchg, Olmuchg, Pandava Batti, Jalbrahmi, Sarva Sambar, Bryophyllum, Honnumugulu and Hardhachk, among others. These plants were collected by teacher N.B. Naik and the students from various places.

One plant has leaves that heal even if cut. Another plant’s leaves, when eaten, make the mouth insensitive to sweetness for half an hour. Some leaves have anaesthetic properties, while others have natural scents. In Pandava Van, the plants include Ashvattha, Bala, Bilimatte (Arjuna), Sarpagandhi and Sahadevi, each possessing medicinal properties.

Additionally, in Smaranashakti Van, there are plants like Vacha, Bekinahajje Balli, Budugumbala and many more. Once a week, a preparation made from these plants is given to the students. The most special plant is Pandava Batti. When its dry leaves are set on fire, they burn like a lamp for one and a half hours without needing any oil! The children enjoy conducting this experiment every day. Teachers integrate the stories of how this plant was used during the era of the Mahabharata, into their lessons. Overall, this school can be proudly called a green school in Uttara Kannada district.
