KOCHI: Where mostly the student-teacher relation is formal, and confined to the four walls of a classroom, here is a pair that has come together to explore their different worlds through canvas and colours.Malavika Sunil, a class VII student and K K Ramesh, an artist and Malavika’s drawing teacher are currently holding a painting exhibition ‘Flavours’ at Durbar Hall.  Both master and the student have brought their own unique sensibilities to their works. If the teacher’s collection depicts a certain realism and sobered approach to life, 12- year old Malavika’s paintings have all the romantic freshness and colour of hope.Ramesh’s paintings explore the relationship between man and nature. Most of the paintings are an ironical depiction of the misdeeds of human beings. In ‘flying ahead’ painting, Ramesh depicts how pollution from factories is leading to serious ill-health, sometimes causing stunted growth.  The teacher is all praise for his student, and says she has an imagination beyond her years. “She’s very different from the other students. All I need to do is give her a little assistance and she paints on her own,” says Ramesh who has been teaching her art for the past three years. In one of Malavika’s painting, she has recaptured the scene from the Vypeen shore. She has drawn Chinese nets with people working and ships and boats at distance. The colour combinations are bright and even the slightest disturbance of the sea is sketched with finesse. “I like to capture nature prefer using bright colours,” says Malavika who likes to paint in water colours. This talented girl is not only good at art but also is a classical dancer and singer. She has won various awards and also is the kalathilakam of the CBSE State youth festival. Malavika says she has no trouble wearing her different hats.  “I like to dance, sing and draw. All these activities I carry along side by side with my academics,” she says. If her teacher fully supports her, Malavika also has adoring parents who encourage her artistic pursuits. “We provide her with everything she needs to nurture her talents. Whatever field she chooses tomorrow, we will stand by her. Today there are opportunities in every field, and if nurtured well, one can be successful,” say Malavika’s parents. The exhibition that began on February 11 will continue till today (Feb 15).
