COIMBATORE: According to data released by the National Crime Records Bureau, Tamil Nadu, like in 2009, recorded the highest number of cases under Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act last year too. “Tamil Nadu reported 22.7% of cases under Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act (567 out of 2,499),” the NCRB report said. However, the figure has dropped considerably compared to 2009 when 716 such cases were registered accounting for 28.9% of the national figure. The State also was ‘proactive’ in registering the highest number of 2,511 cases for violations of the Copyright Act. All other States recorded only three digit or smaller figures in this category. The number of persons arrested for committing offences under the IPC in the State had also gone up from 2,08,677 during 2009 to 2,11,631 last year, up by 1.4%. Meanwhile, former DGP R Nataraj said the NCRB’s crime rate figures (number of crime per lakh population) cannot be taken at face value. “You must interpret it taking into account the incidence of crimes against public order and crimes against body. Only if these crimes have gone up, it would indicate that lawlessness has increased,” he said.Crimes against body include offences like murder, kidnapping and causing death due to negligence. Crime against public order would include cases of rioting and arson. In 2010, Tamil Nadu had recorded 3,300 crimes against public order, which is far lower than several States. However, as for crimes against body are concerned, the State registered an alarmingly 42,221 cases i.e. a crime rate of 62.43. Only AP and MP are ahead in this list.
