CHENNAI: Higher Secondary School Headmasters observed an one-day strike to end the disparity in promotion due to the different services band they were placed in, here on Sunday. It was organised by Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary School Headmasters’ Association (TNHSSHA) urging the Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to take swift action and to alleviate the trouble which had been brewing since Higher Secondary Education was introduced in 1978.Speaking to Express, D Subramanian, president of TNHSSHA, said that they joined the services in 1979 as Post Graduate Teachers who were placed in Higher Secondary Educational Services whereas the other grade teachers were placed in either School Educational Service or Educational Subordinate Services.“After joining the respective service, the first promotion as Higher Secondary School HM came in 1997 and the next level of promotion was District Educational Officer(DEO) which is also of the same cadre since in both capacities, the pay remains the same.Whereas in the case of Graduate Teachers who joined in 1983 elevated as High School HMs in 2000 and as DEOs and subsequently as CEOs in 2011. Those who worked as our subordinates now convenes and chairs meetings as our CEOs on several occasions,” he elaborated.State Law secretary of TNHSSHA said that this could be alleviated only if the service of both as Higher Secondary HM and DEO were considered during the promotion for CEO as those two cadres drew the same level of pay. He also demanded that the Higher Secondary HMs should be shifted to the School Educational Services band to avoid the disparity in future.
