GULBARGA: Three inmates of the Gulbarga Central Jail manhandled a jail superintendent inside the prison.Krishnakumar, the superintendent who is currently recuperating at the District General Hospital, told Express that when he was on routine rounds, he spotted a convict conversing on a cellphone near the barracks. He seized the phone and asked him to return to his ward. Later, when the official visited the convicts' barracks, three convicts assaulted with him a stone on his head. As they chased Krishnakumar and punched him, jail support staffers chased the convicts with lathis.The assailants were identified as Mysore Manja, Mohammad Jiyasuddin and Mastan Ali. While Mastan Ali is an active member of the banned Deendaar Anjuman organisation and has been convicted in the Wadi church bomb blast case, the other two have been convicted in different murder cases.Meanwhile, Sharanabasava, a jail staffer, told Express that with many posts in the jail still vacant, staff feel insecure."We do not know how many convicts possess cell phones," a jail staffer said on condition of anonymity.Early this year, a pistol was smuggled into the jail allegedly to kill a convict.
