The Justice MB Shah panel will decide whether the cases require independent investigation or not.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday referred all cases of alleged fake encounters that took place in Gujarat between 2003-2006 to Justice (retired) MB Shah. The apex court directed the one-man committee of Justice Shah to decide whether the cases of fake encounters require independent investigation or not.

Justice Shah will give his report to the Supreme Court in three months.

Noted lyricist Javed Akhtar and journalist BG Verghese had approached the Supreme Court demanding investigation into cases of alleged fake encounters between 2003-2006 in Gujarat.

The Gujarat government had appointed Justice Shah in 2011 to look into cases of fake encounters in the state which were being investigated by the Special Task Force.

Some of the prominent encounter cases in the state include the killing of

Sohrabuddin Sheikh, his wife Kausarbi, Tulsiram Prajapati, Ishrat Jahan, Javed Sheikh alias Pranesh Pillai, Amjad Ali Rana and Zeeshan Johar.

Several top police officers of Gujarat have been accused of being involved in the fake encounters.

Former Gujarat home minister Amit Shah is also accused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case.
