CHENNAI: East Coast Christian Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Neelankarai, has won the Green Schools of India Award, 2011 for its active environmental conservation activities. Prof MS Swaminathan, Chairman, C P Ramaswamy Environment Education Centre, presented the award to the authorities of the East Coast Christian Matriculation Higher Secondary School at a function held here recently. Nanditha Krishna, director, CPREEC, said the school has been a model of environmental management. “Each classroom in the school segregates solid waste into bio-degradable and non-bio-degradable waste. It encourages recycling of paper and other material for making scientific toys and models,” she said.Further, every week, the school committee awards star ratings to each classroom on the basis of solid waste segregation, energy saving (switching off lights and fans) and eco-friendly attitude, besides encouraging the students to wear eco-friendly dress materials.Nanditha Krishna said the Green Schools of India award was also given to the best green school in Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Pondicherry and Ooty. BV Gundappa, Assistant Master, Government Pre-University College, Nagavalli, Tumkur district, Karnataka received the Award for Environmental Education for the year 2011. He created awareness among the students and the local community of Nagavalli to protect water resources and wildlife.
