New Delhi: The Government on Wednesday said that it has suspended the area managers, depot managers and managers of the Hapur, Orai and Harduaganj FCI depots in Uttar Pradesh for causing food grain wastage by storing it in the open during the rainy season.
In all, the government suspended nine Food Corporation of India (FCI) officials.
It has also sought an explanation from ED (north) and GM (UP) of the FCI in this regard, an official release said.
Following recent media reports on improper handling and damage to wheat stocks at some FCI godowns, the Food and Agriculture Ministry had ordered an inspection of the Hapur, Orai and Harduaganj depots to check their storage conditions.
The inspection team, comprising senior officers from the Department of Food and Public Distribution, submitted its report to the government after visiting the facilities.
The report indicated serious dereliction of duty on the part of the FCI officers concerned and estimated the grain damage at 345 tonnes.
The government also instructed the FCI chairman to take immediate penal action against the officers concerned, and work towards improving storage conditions at FCI depots across the country.
"It (agriculture ministry) has also directed that action be taken against FCI officers who had willfully submitted a wrong report regarding damage to the wheat stocks at Orai and Harduaganj depots," the statement said.
