BANGALORE: After being in the news for wrong reasons, the Government Science College is finally holding the celebrations of the International Year of Chemistry 2011, which was inaugurated by Minister for Higher Education V S Acharya.Speaking on the occasion, he said, “Karnataka tops the list of states having the most number of government colleges, thus signifying the inclusive education.” The state currently has over 300 government colleges, the minister added.Acharya laid emphasis on the importance of Chemistry as a subject. “The discipline is applicable even to the most miniscule of concepts. Students should be encouraged to take up pure sciences as a subject and career option,” he further stated.“Accessing information is very easy today and one should utilise it to the maximum,” he advised students.“Chemistry is an important field, which is necessary in making our country economically developed and stronger,”  Vice-Chancellor of Karnataka State Open University, Mysore, K S Rangappa opined.“We need a lot of chemists. Chemical Biology is emerging as a popular subject of study. There should be innovation in the fields of treatment and renewable energy and students should be encouraged to take up pure sciences as a subject and career option” he said.
