Bhubaneshwar: On November 18, 2005, 20-year-old Richa Mishra, a college student committed suicide allegedly because three college lecturers gave her poor marks for not attending their private tuition classes.
Eight months after the incident, the three accused lecturers - Anang Mahapatra, Sahadev Swin and D P Patnaik - have been arrested.
In her suicide note Richa, a commerce student, had written that the lecturers harassed her and marked her poorly in the exams, because she didn't hire them for private tuitions.
"In our investigation we found prima facie evidence against them and so they were arrested," Superintendent of Police, Khurda, Amitabh Thakur, says..
Orissa government had set up a panel to re-examine Richa's papers after her death. The panel gave her a first division and an additional 10 per cent marks.
The state government also suspended a few government lectures who took private tuitions, a practice banned in Orissa.
Richa's parents are consoled with the little justice. "I am very happy with their arrest. I can now hope that my daughter's soul will rest in peace," Richa’s father, P K Patnaik says.
