Fund crunch leaves Ramalingeswara temple in shambles

The temple of Sri Ramalingeswara Swamy in Dharmapuri is in a dilapidated condition, with the roof of sanctum sanctorum leaking during rains, the Mukadwara Mantapam weak, several ornamental sculptures defaced and a pillar of the temple developing cracks.

A sub-temple of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple, the temple is under the control of the Archeology Survey of India. Because of lack of funds, the department had allowed the endowments section to take up repair and renovation in strict adherence to the ASI norms.

According to temple authorities, it had taken nearly three years for obtaining permission to renovate the temple from the director of the Archeological Survey of India (ASI). Since 2010, three letters were written seeking permissions.

“The roof of Kalyana Mantapam also needs to be renovated. I had written a letter to the Stapati of endowments department," Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple executive officer Ch Anjaneyulu said, adding that even the endowments department was reluctant to take up the works due to shortage of funds.

But when the urgency of the situation was explained, the endowment commissioner agreed to take up the works and issued orders to its effect, Anjaneyulu added.

Meanwhile, another ancient temple of Lord Bheemeswara Swamy, a sub-temple of Raja Rajeswara Swamy temple in Vemulavada, is also under threat of destruction if no action was initated. An ASI team inspected the temple in 2011, after which it was decided to take up chemical washing but nothing happened till date.
