BANGALORE: Groups that had earlier filed an interlocutory application in the Supreme Court against two major corporates involved in mining illegalities have now welcomed the Supreme Court order to the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) to file their recommendations.The two groups — Samaj Parivartana Samudaya and National Committee for Protection of Natural Resources (NCPNR) — have now been called to attend a CEC hearing on February 18, based on which they will send their report to the Supreme Court.Speaking to the Media here on Wednesday, president of the NCPNR S R Hiremath said, “What happened before the forest bench in the Supreme Court is significant. The apex court has acted upon our interlocutory application and has ordered the CEC to give their recommendations.”He pointed out that the country’s second largest gross abuse of power has been witnessed in Karnataka. “We are demanding a transparent system and if the state government has any responsibility they would have acted on the recommendations made by former Lokayukta Justice N Santosh Hegde,” said Hiremath.The petition pertains to the involvement of two major corporates, Adani Enterprises LTD and Jindal Steel Works, that were involved in illegal mining activities which caused major losses to the state exchequer.
