NAMAKKAL/VRIDDACHALAM: A flood alert has been sounded in the residential colonies on the banks of Cauvery river in Kumarapalayam on Tuesday.Expecting a huge outflow from the Mettur dam, Kumarapalayam municipal officials issued the flood alert. Chairman of the municipality Sivasakthi K Dhanasekaran told Express, “We have sounded the alert through the town criers for the past two days expecting a huge flow of water, even though there is no immediate threat”.Town criers beat the drum on Tuesday in the areas including Kalaimagal Nagar, Manimegalai Street and Cauvery Nagar to alert the residents on the impending danger of flood.Officials said that about 5,000 people have been living in the residential areas which are very close to the river. M Chandrasekaran, municipal commissioner said that the areas would be flooded only when a huge volume of water is discharged from Mettur dam.  Protection wall collapsesThe base of a flood-prevention-wall, under construction, collapsed in Vellaru River owing to recent rains and flood near Vriddachalam. Residents demanded that officials examine the walls and ensure quality in construction.
